Worried About Your Neck Pain?

You have probably convinced yourself that it is nothing, and that the pain will go away by itself, especially if you ignore it long enough. But the constant pain and stiffness makes it difficult to ignore. In fact, it’s probably having a negative effect on your life and you’re definitely not sleeping well.

You might have been told that ‘resting’ your neck (easier said than done) or avoiding those activities that cause you pain will make the pain ‘magically’ go away. IT WON’T! In fact, your neck pain will probably get worse and your neck will get stiffer than when it all started.

Neck pain is an awful condition. It affects your normal movement, making it harder for you to get around. This has an enormous impact on your self-confidence. You can’t turn round, driving is difficult, looking after children is nearly impossible. Even doing simple tasks like getting dressed can be a challenge. You become OVER cautious when living your life and eventually your neck becomes weaker and even stiffer.

You shouldn’t have to live with neck pain. We often get asked…

“WHY IS IT HAPPENING TO ME"?
Or
"WHY AM I STILL SUFFERING FROM NECK PAIN"?

REST is not always the answer and something CAN be done!

Sadly, the majority of people who come to see us at our Relive Physiotherapy Clinic in Chester for neck pain have had bad advice from somebody or looked ‘neck pain’ up on the internet. I’m sure you are familiar with the scenario; ‘you should rest’, ‘just take some painkillers and you’ll feel better’, ‘wait and see how you feel.’ But days, weeks, months (and sometimes even years) later, nothing has changed, and the neck pain is worse than it was before. The advice you took wasn’t right, as painkillers only treat the pain and not the problem and rest rarely addresses the cause of the pain. You’ve followed the advice that you’ve had, but you’re a way down the road and fundamentally, nothing has changed.

If you don’t do the right things, then your neck pain will be an unpleasant companion in your daily life. Lots of our clients think that because they are ‘getting older’ it means that it is inevitable. WRONG! The pain may have made them give up the activities that they love – gardening, golf, playing with the children or grandchildren, sport, walking, DIY or painting, but they don’t need to abandon these activities for ever.

Does That Sound Like YOU?

When you have persistent pain, in this case, in your neck, you get confused. There is so much information out there, be it from the internet (which is often conflicting) or from well-meaning family members or friends who are not medically trained and don’t really understand the complexity of your issue. You’re at a loss as to what you should do, so you generally end up doing NOTHING and trying to live with the pain. If you are suffering from a painful or stiff neck, you probably believe it was caused by something, such as sleeping awkwardly, or even just turning your head too quickly. But the truth is often so different. It may have been caused by years of poor habits which have caused the neck muscles to get weaker and the pain that you are feeling is just the EFFECT of those poor habits.

Is This Happening To You Too?

Neck Pain is a lot more common than you might think and nobody should have to suffer in silence. At Relive Physiotherapy, we hear all of the above from people who have neck pain on a regular basis. In fact, they tell us:

  • lineI thought the pain would go away by itself, but it DIDN’T
  • lineI’ve been told that everyone my AGE gets this, and I’ll just have to ‘Put Up With It’
  • lineI went to see my GP – they gave me painkillers and told me to rest. It felt better for a while, but as soon as I stop taking the medication, my neck pain was back
  • lineI found some exercises on the internet, but they didn’t help, only made it worse
  • lineI went to see a massage therapist. It was nice and pleasant at first, but it didn’t fix my pain long term
  • lineI’ve been to see all manner of people and tried what they recommended but nothing they said or did seemed to help

What Can I Do Today To Get Rid Of My Neck Pain?

Make a decision about Physiotherapy. TODAY. It’s the first step to being free from neck pain. It will also have a significant effect on your physical and mental wellbeing which will put you back in control. Making the call will take a load off your mind and you will feel relieved. It’s time to say goodbye to your neck pain, you’re back in control!

Have you ever tried turning your head after resting for a while? Your neck will probably have become stiff and even a little painful. Resting is good, but it’s not always the best thing for neck pain. Too much rest makes the different muscles in your neck get tighter, weak, and stiff. Doing some targeted exercises which are meant to help your condition and visiting the Physiotherapist will get you active and pain-free quicker than resting.

This is the best way to get your neck pain back under control in the shortest amount of time. The exercises that you need for your neck can be prescribed by your Physiotherapist and they can demonstrate the best way and right sequence to do them. Unfortunately, getting your exercises from the internet will not help in 90% of the cases as they will not be the right ones FOR YOU. Not all neck injuries and pain are the same, so the exercises need to be chosen for YOU by a qualified professional.

If you follow all of the steps above, then you will start to feel better. But, nothing beats the hands-on treatment that you will get at Relive Physiotherapy. Many places don’t believe in this and prefer to give you exercises to do at home. But at Relive Physiotherapy, hands-on treatment is a standard and a vital part of your recovery. It has long-lasting effects and is a must for any neck injury. If your neck pain is affecting your work, ability to stay active or spend times with friends and loved ones, then come and see us at Relive Physiotherapy and we will get you back to the life you DESERVE.
