THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME

Have you ever felt pain, tingling, or even weakness in your arm and wondered what’s going on? It might be caused by something called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). Although it sounds complicated, TOS is a condition that can be understood and managed, especially with the help of a Physiotherapist. Let’s break it down in simple terms.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (or TOS) is a condition that affects the area between your neck and shoulder. This space, called the thoracic outlet, is like a small tunnel between your collarbone and your first rib where important nerves and blood vessels pass through on their way to your arms. Sometimes, this space can get squished, pressing on those nerves and blood vessels and causing a range of unpleasant symptoms like:

- Pain in your neck, shoulder, or arm.

- Tingling or numbness in your hand or fingers.

-  Weakness in your grip.

- In some cases, swelling or even a change in the colour of your arm (Rare)

Why Does TOS Happen?

There are a few common reasons why the thoracic outlet can become compressed:

1. Repetitive Movements: Actions you do over and over, like typing, lifting, or even swimming can strain the area.

2. Postural changes: Hunching over your desk or slouching while scrolling on your phone can tighten the space.

3. Injuries: Accidents like whiplash or breaking a collarbone can lead to TOS.

4. Structural Differences: Some people are born with extra ribs or unusual muscle structures that make them more prone to TOS.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

The good news is that Physiotherapy is a powerful way to manage TOS! Here’s what a Relive Physiotherapist will do to help you feel better:

1. Assess Your Situation: We will start by understanding your symptoms, your daily habits, and any movements that might be causing the problem.

2. Relieve Your Pain: Hands-on techniques like manual mobilisations, soft tissue releases or gentle stretching can ease tight muscles and reduce discomfort. Other advanced techniques such as Acupuncture  may be used to reduce pain and muscle tension, while improving circulation and range of motion. It also promotes healing through the release of endorphins, enhances overall mobility hence supporting the rehabilitation efforts.

3. Improve Your Posture: We will teach you exercises to improve your posture, which will take pressure off the nerves and blood vessels.

4. Stretch and Strengthen: We will guide you through specific stretches to loosen the tight areas and give you strength exercises to build up the muscles that support your shoulders and neck.

5. Everyday Tips: You’ll also get advice on how to adjust your workspace, avoid certain activities when the pain is too much, and a few more advise on how to reduce the strain.

How Can You Prevent It?

While not all cases of TOS can be avoided, you can lower your chances by:

• Sitting and standing with good posture- Have a good ergonomic desk.

• Being mindful of repetitive movements—take breaks when you need to.

• Doing regular stretches and exercises to keep the area strong and flexible.
